Tanner - The Driver ...
Throughout the years, fans of Driver have accepted that Driv3r ended with a cliffhanger, the question is who's heart stopped ? Was it Tanner's or Jericho's ?
After more then 3 years of working on it, some dedicated fans have discovered that it's a higher probability that Jericho is the one who dies or at least reaches a state of temporary death at the end of Driv3r.
In the picture above, we see a doctor looking at Tanner's eyes, the image or view is taken from Tanner's perspective.
In the 2nd picture, we see Jericho lying on a stretcher and being led into the emergency room. The red arrow is pointing to a set of lights in the ceiling.
In the 3rd image, the ceiling and lights from image two are visible once again. This leads us to believe that this screen is taken from Jericho's point of view. The shockers are shown and shortly thereafter, the patient flat lines ...
Before we go on, it's important to mention Driver: Vegas. What is that you ask? Driver: Vegas is a mobile game developed by Gameloft and GLU Mobile. The game's story is a direct follow-up to Driv3r. In it we find that Tanner is the one who flat lines at the end of Driv3r. His heart gets jumpstarted and he decides to go after Jericho in Las Vegas. Technically, this would destroy the whole Jericho dies argument but many fans have come to the agreement that Driver: Vegas is not a valid entry in the series since it's not developed by Reflections and that its story arc be discredited.
Here is that picture from Driver: Parallel lines again :
DPL's storyline takes place in both the year 1978 and 2006, that specific screenshot is taken from the inside of a police station in the '06 era. This is still the best clue that tells us that Tanner is alive. Some say it could be a memoriam for a dead undercover cop but the "Driver 4" title beside his face leads us to believe that he'll be in the next game. The question now is how old is Tanner and in what years/decades do the Driver games take place?
Original Driver fan sites from the past had a picture with all the cars from Driver on it. One of the vehicles was identified as a 1979 Buick Regal Sports coupe. But everything we knew was that the game took place in the 70's.
In the opening story sequence of the original Driver, McKenzie says to Tanner "Tanner. 3 years and you're still in my department. We don't have many former race car drivers [...]" so that leads us to assume that Tanner joined McKenzie in 1976 while the storyline in Driver takes place in 1979. On the official Driver 2 site, it was noted that Tanner was in his mid 40's so that again leads us to assume that Driver 2 takes place in the late 1970's to early 1980's. The 80's are a better guess since the games story revolves around a gang war and major drug dealer but we have no solid proof so that statement can't be acknowledged as fact.
Here are some images taken from Driv3r. This is the first clue that tells us that Driv3r could take place in 2003. Granted, it's really just a garbage container and it could be argued that the number is nothing more than a serial or production issue number/or even just an easter egg but for now, we'll give it the benefit of the doubt.
The second clue is the fact that Tanner has a Nokia 3200 cell phone. Now, not everything supports the 2003 timeline. All the cars in the game are from the 1950's to the 1980's but it's more logical to have older cars in 2003 then it is having a Nokia mobile in the 1970's or 80's. Also to add, if Driv3r does take place in 2003 then Tanner is at least 50 years old and judging from the FMV cut scenes in the game that may not be the case. So for now, the year or decade in Driv3r is a mystery but we believe it's 2003. Here are two screenshots taken from TK's safe house in the 2006 era of Driver: Parallel Lines. The first image reads “Tanner Lives” while the second states “I Love Tanner” These are just two more clues thrown in by Reflections that support our argument that Tanner survives the ending of Driv3r and that he is alive in the year 2006 :
The final clue revolves around the fact that Driver: L.A. Undercover was released. Driver L.A. Undercover is the third mobile game with the Driver name (Driv3r mobile, Driver: Vegas, Driver: LA Undercover). It was developed by Gameloft and (importantly) published by Ubisoft. The reason why it can be viewed as important is because L.A. Undercover is the first original Driver game that Ubisoft took part in since acquiring the series from Atari (Driver: 76 and the PC version of Driver: Parallel Lines were old Atari projects that never came to be because that company was trying to sell the rights of the franchise) Tanner is the lead character in the game and this could be a clue that Ubisoft is dedicated to bringing back the original wheelman back into the main series. The main character of the game is Tanner and the game takes place in 2008. At the beginning, a guy called Chuck hits Tanner up for a last job and tries to get him back, like if Tanner went in retirement in 2003. That could have meant that after Tanner was shot by Jericho in 2003 (Driv3r) he was too old after all that and went in retirement and his face in the Police HQ in New York (2006) could have been a memorial for an old (and good) police officer. But since fans don't really accept Driver: Vegas' storyline, it's difficult to say that everything in Driver: LA Undercover is true.
